Nasya : The nasal route to better health
The science of Ayurveda offers various health benefits and its medical philosophy emphasizes on the aspect of restoring biological energies in order to have the body return to its normal functioning through a more natural form of treatment. This allows the body's immunity to take over and fight off ailments.
The two main forms of treatment administered under Ayurveda are as follows:-
Shodhana :- It focuses on getting rid of toxins present in the body, through a purification process.
Shamana:- This process involves administering medications like powder, tablets, decoction into the body by simply consuming it.
The Panchakarma treatment is primarily a part of the Shodhana form of treatment and holds extreme importance. Nasya therapy is part of the five administered treatments in Panchakarma. It refers to the process of medication given through the nasal route, involving various herbal formulations composed of ghee, powder, fresh juice or oil. It is considered to be very effective when used in the right manner.
How Nasya works
When the medicated herbal formula is taken in through the nostrils, it flows through, to reach the membrane of the brain. This alerts the nerves that connect the scalp and the brain, thereby helping with improving the quality of hair follicles.
There are different types of Nasya treatments, catering to various imbalanced doshas.
Cleansing Nasya or Shodhana
It is also termed as Virechan or Shodhana in Nasya Ayurveda. It is given to those with a Kapha type of imbalance causing headache, heaviness, swelling, cold, congestion, itching, stiffness, etc. It also helps control excess secretions, salivation, anorexia, epilepsy, rhinitis, etc.
Nutritional Nasya or Brihmana
Also known as Bruhana Nasya, it is administered to those experiencing an imbalance in the Vatta dosha. It usually requires oil (or meat juice in very rare circumstances) to be mixed with plant extract resin like camphor. It is used for problems like migraines, toothache, earache, vision problems, sleep, difficulty in waking up, etc.
Sedative Nasya or Shamana
Shamana Nasya or sedative Nasya is administered to those who experience an imbalance in the pitta dosha. It uses ghee (meat juice n very rare circumstances) or water for treating health issues including dandruff, premature wrinkling, discoloration of facial skin cells, premature greying, disease of the hair and skin, etc.
What are Nasya’s main ingredients?
Formulated with medicated cow’s ghee, it is one of the safest ingredients out there.
Ghee has soothing properties. It also delays premature greying of hair and strengthens the immune system.
The Yashtimadu benefits hair health by calming the aggravated pitta levels in you so your dosha won’t act grumpy anymore. It also takes up the role of a hair tonic and brain tonic working on nerves and those responsible for your hair.
When these two amazing ingredients are combined, you get Traya’s Nasal Ghrit – an effective formulation that fights to keep your hair in the best state. It spreads all throughout the head and nourishes hair roots, preventing hair from falling out.
Types of Nasya
- Virechana (cleansing) Nasya: Dry herbs or powders like brahmi and jatamamsi are inhaled through the nose.
- Bruhana (nutritive) Nasya: Nourishing and strengthening substances like medicated oils, ashwagandha ghee and different types of oils are administered through the nose.

- Marshya: A small dose of Ayurvedic nose oil or ghee is introduced into the nostrils with the little finger. This is combined with a gentle massage to help relieve stress and open the deep tissues. This can be done on a regular basis or occasionally. If it is done on a daily basis it is called prati marshy.
