How To Use Menthol For Hair

Menthol also known as mint has always been used in aromatherapy and traditional herbal medicines for various treatments. Since it is extremely soluble in oil and alcohol it is an excellent base for many pharmaceutical and cosmetic products. The distillation and subsequent freezing of mint oil can give us mint crystals.

Menthol has a wide range of properties that facilitate its use in a variety of industries and one very potent but the lesser-known quality of menthol is its ability to stimulate hair growth and health if used in specific ways. It also has antispasmodic qualities which increase energy levels, reduce stress, and aid sleep. Menthol is a vasodilator and has anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties as well. It helps in increased blood flow of the scalp and this in turn provides valuable nutrients to the hair follicles. The cool feeling that it induces makes it a chosen remedy to deal with the summer heat. Menthol is also an extremely popular ingredient in shampoos as they help in removing dandruff.

Apart from that menthol is also a very good sebum regulator and helps in cleansing the strands. It helps remove hair pollutants and repairs any damage done to hair. Menthol can also be used in combination with other natural products to improve hair’s shine, and quality and promote the growth of longer and stronger hair.

Menthol Crystals For Hair Growth

Hair products infused with crystals of menthol can promote the hair’s natural shine and augment the robust growth of longer, and better-quality hair.

One such hair product that consists of menthol is peppermint oil , it is widely known to provide nutrients to hair follicles, thereby arresting hair breakage and damage.

Menthol Benefits for Hair

Menthol crystals have a potent capacity of regulating oil production in the scalp. It can also be used to reduce dandruff as it is a very useful clarifying agent. Its sharp scent and its cleansing ability also help remove lice and nits and also help prevent them from latching on to hair. You can enhance the natural properties of menthol when it is mixed with other treatment products.

Menthol Oil For Hair Growth

Menthol oil is very effective in repairing damage, as the oil seeps deeper into the scalp and stimulates dormant hair follicles. Menthol oil reduces excess itching and inflammation and promotes scalp health which eventually leads to hair growth.

How To Use Menthol Oil For Hair

Menthol can be mixed with aloe vera gel or carrier oil to solve itchy scalp issues. You can also mix menthol crystals with your chosen hair oil to accelerate hair growth. Peppermint oils are prepared to have the highest levels of menthol content. You can put a few drops of peppermint oil directly into your shampoo or conditioner. You could also add the drops to a tablespoon of essential oil.

Take a small amount and mix it with the oil and massage thoroughly onto your scalp. Let it stay on your hair for 20 minutes before you wash it off. However, there might be a possibility that the effect of the menthol might turn out to be more than your skin can handle. In that case, use some additional carrier oil to minimize the effects or you can also opt to shampoo immediately.

You can repeat this twice a week. You can also opt to add menthol crystals to your soap recipes and enhance the quality of your soaps. Ensure that the crystals are totally dissolved in your soaping oils as you stir well to negate the possibility of skin irritations. This is a popular way of using menthol for hair growth.

Menthol Recipes For Hair Growth

The best hair oil recipe for enhancing hair growth can be made by diluting ½ teaspoon of menthol crystals in 4 tablespoons of your preferred carrier oil. Take small scoops of the oil with your fingertips and massage it into your scalp and smoothly put it over the strands and all around it.

Make it a point to wash hair with a sulfate-free shampoo. This procedure can be used two times a week.

A menthol hair mask could be used to condition your hair and repair split ends. Use a shower cap after using a menthol hair mask and wash your hair after half an hour.

Prepare a hair mask with a tablespoon of honey, ¼ cup sour cream, and 4-6 drops of peppermint oil. Apply this mask to your hair and wash it off after 20 minutes. These remedies are also very effective in solving itchy scalp issues.

You can also mix 1 tablespoon of sunflower oil and  2 drops of peppermint essential oil. Heat the blend slightly and add this to your hair and scalp. Wash it off after 20 minutes with a mild shampoo.

Sweet almond oil is also another good remedy as it has antioxidants, good vitamin E content, vitamins, and fats. When used with peppermint oil it helps add strength to your follicles as well.

Add 2 drops of peppermint oil to 2 tablespoons of sweet almond oil and heat after blending well. Apply this to your scalp and wash it off after 15 minutes with a sulfate-free shampoo.

You can also add coconut oil and rosemary essential oil to peppermint oil to fight dandruff and promote the growth of hair. Mix 2 drops of peppermint oil and 1 drop of rosemary essential oil with 2 tablespoons of coconut oil, warm it, and apply it over your scalp and hair. Wash it after 20 minutes.

You can even use a pre-shampoo treatment oil which blends the goodness of menthol, rosemary essential oil, and stabilized vitamin E to stimulate your hair follicles.

Peppermint oil is best for people with oily scalps and hair. You can use it up to 3 times a week. You can also use peppermint oil directly by mixing it with coconut oil, jojoba oil, or shea butter oil.

You can use a menthol oil which can be prepared by combining menthol crystals with caffeine, niacinamide, menthol, and rosemary essential oil. This is also very effective in rejuvenating your hair.

Takeaway

Research has established that using menthol for hair could lead to the growth of thicker and longer hair in time. But do not use the menthol oil without diluting it with some carrier oil to avoid a burning sensation. These essential oils are generally not meant for children and one should avoid using these oils on them.

Also, one should make sure that these oils are safe to be used on skin. Menthol oil should however not be used as a cure for more serious hair issues such as baldness and alopecia.  However, they can be used for the soothing effect for telogen effluvium, traction alopecia and post-partum shedding.
