How to reduce hair fall

How to reduce hair fall

How do I prevent hair fall? How do I decide If I am having an abnormal or a normal fall? Our lifestyles, overuse of styling products are all a culprit here. But do you know that a small amount of hair fall daily is normal too?

Your hair goes through a natural growth cycle consisting of four phases. Anagen is the first phase, and it can last anywhere from two to seven years. This is the growth phase. Here, the hair follicle adds new material to the hair shaft continuously and the hair strand keeps growing. Catagen is the second phase that can last for two to four weeks. This is a transitional phase where the hair follicle stops generating new hair strands after initially slowing down. The third phase telogen lasts for up to four months. In this phase, all growth activity has inhibited and this is like a resting phase. The last stage is known as exogen. In this stage, the hair is shed. As this cycle follows the hair grows and subsequently falls off.

At any point in time about 5%-10% of the hair follicle are in the telogen or the resting phase and it is normal to lose about 50-100 strands of hair every day. If you lose more than 150 strands of hair every day, then you can consider it as abnormal hair loss and must address the issue.

What are the Causes of Hair Fall?

The answer lies in the causes. Hair loss could be occurring due to a variety of physiological reasons ranging from nutrition to stress to hereditary and other physical and medical events during the lifetime. You must remember that abnormal hair loss could also be a symptom of an underlying medical condition or disorder and thus any abnormal hair loss must be diagnosed and addressed.

  • Nutritional imbalance
  • For good hair growth, the body needs essential nutrients such as vitamins A, B, C, D and minerals such as iron, zinc, selenium as well as proteins. Nutritional imbalance due to improper diet or vitamin D deficiency due to inadequate exposure to sunlight could be causing hair loss. A well-balanced diet can help us know how to reduce hair fall.

  • Hormonal Imbalance
  • Women can have hormonal imbalance once they are over 30 years of age. These developments can lead to hair loss. Childbirth or menopause may also lead to hair loss due to the same reasons.

  • Thyroid imbalance
  • Thyroid imbalance due to over secretion (hyperthyroidism) or under secretion (hypothyroidism) impacts the hair growth cycle and may lead to hair loss. Such conditions are characterized by other symptoms such as weight gain or loss, heat and cold sensitivity, and changes in heart rate.

  • Age
  • As you age, the hair growth slows down and the strands become smaller. The hair starts to become thinner and grey. To maintain the natural health of the hair, whole foods and a balanced diet are more essential as you age.

  • Stress
  • Stress is a common phenomenon nowadays. Stress also causes hair fall. If you’re looking for how to reduce hair fall, cut down stress through exercise, yoga, and meditation.

  • PCOS
  • Women who have polycystic ovary syndrome or PCOS suffer from a hormonal imbalance which causes the level of androgens in the body to rise. Such imbalance causes the hair on the scalp to become thinner. The condition is also characterized by weight gain, acne, and ovulation issues.

  • Medications
  • Medication for conditions such as cancer, arthritis, and high blood pressure can also cause hair fall. The impact, in this case, might be temporary or permanent. Hair loss can sometimes happen due to too much consumption of Vitamin A as well.

  • Contraceptive pills
  • Birth control pills have hormones that may be the reason behind hair loss.

  • Pregnancy
  • Women experience postpartum hair loss which is post-pregnancy hair loss due to the hormonal changes in the body during pregnancy.

  • Hairstyling products
  • Overuse of styling tools and products causes the hair to become dry and frizzy. The toxic chemicals found in dyes and other styling products adversely affect the health of the hair as they corrode and damage the hair follicles. You are recommended to use natural shampoos and dyes on your hair. Excessive usage of styling tools such as flattening iron or curler may also be responsible for hair loss.

  • Genetics
  • Genetic hair loss is inherited from either of your parents’ side of the family.

  • Hair pulling disorder
  • Trichotillomania is a hair pulling psychological condition in which a person constantly has the urge to pull one’s hair. This can lead to substantial hair loss and cause bald patches.

  • Hair loss medical conditions
    • Telogen effluvium – in this condition shedding accelerates due to stress, illness, or hormones. Shedding happens all over the head but generally, there is regrowth in six months.
    • Androgenetic alopecia – common in women, the hair at the back is unaffected but the hair behind the hairline starts thinning, including the top and frontal area. This happens due to hormonal activities.
    • Alopecia areata – this is an autoimmune disorder and causes patches of hair loss. This condition can lead to total baldness.
