Paraben Free Shampoos and Why You Should Switch to One?

Paraben Free Shampoos and Why You Should Switch to One?

Our generation is obsessed with shampoos. We have shampoos for hair fall, hair breakage, split ends, dull hair, frizzy hair and even colored hair. In short, whenever there is a hair related concern, we go grab a bottle of shampoo even without thinking why?

Shampoos have just one function- to clean. Shampoos are meant to clear the scalp of any dirt, dust or oil that sits on its surface. It can practically do nothing for your hair, especially for your hair loss. What’s more, regular shampoos contain paraben and sulphate which have a lot of harmful effects on the body. And even though they do clean your hair well they are not the best option when it comes to maintaining good hair and scalp health.

Toxin free shampoos on the other hand help in maintaining healthy hair. Toxin free shampoos are made of natural, eco-friendly ingredients that help retain the natural oil of the hair. Using toxin free shampoos will make your scalp and hair feel much better. There are multiple benefits of switching your shampoo to a natural non-toxic one.

  • It improves hair and scalp health.

Regular shampoos while cleaning the hair strip off the natural oils leaving the hair dry and scalp itchy. Synthetic shampoos may aggravate conditions like itchiness or irritation in sensitive skin. Since natural shampoos help hair to hold onto its natural oils, using it daily  makes the hair softer and smoother while enhancing its natural lustre.

  • Balances pH levels

Natural shampoos have a ph-balanced formula which is neither too alkaline nor too acidic. It provides a soothing effect to the hair by adding vitamins, minerals, oils, and botanical extracts to the scalp and the hair follicles. This encourages healthy growth and enhances the overall texture and appearance of the hair. It has natural moisturisers and at times is enriched with pure and nourishing moisturizers obtained from leaves, nuts, seeds, or kernels.

What are Parabens ?

Parabens are preservatives used to give extended shelf life to cosmetics, some edible items and other pharmaceutical products. It prevents the growth of fungi, bacteria and yeast that could spoil a product. Look out for parabens in your products -propylparaben, butylparaben, methylparaben or Alkyl para hydroxy benzoates are all parabens that are hidden in your favourite shampoos. Parabens are used to make a product more effective for the user but they have some harmful effects on the body.

Shampoos which have sulphate as an ingredient damage hair and therefore sulphate-free shampoos are recommended.  So, what is a sulphate free shampoo ?

Sulphates are normally added to shampoos to boost their cleansing action and to clean an oily scalp but they also strip it of all essential oils and contribute to a dry scalp. They harm the hair proteins and lead to hair breakage. Commonly used sulphates are sodium lauryl sulphate, ammonium lauryl sulphate and sodium laureth sulphate. Sulphate free shampoos are essential in maintaining the natural oils and keeping the scalp hydrated.

How Do Paraben Shampoos Damage Your Hair?

Parabens may cause scalp irritations. Some studies reveal that blood and urine samples have been found with traces of paraben after using shampoos and other beauty products with parabens.

There may be allergic reactions due to the presence of parabens. It has been observed that cases of dermatitis tend to aggravate after using products with parabens, especially in young children. Parabens can also cause an imbalance in the hormones and disrupt their normal functioning. They act as an endocrine disruptor. This may even cause breast cancer. Paraben traces have been found in breast tumours, especially the ones which are malignant.

When Do You Need to Use Paraben Free Shampoos?

With so many harmful effects one should not wait to see signs of when to shift to a paraben free shampoo. Nevertheless, if you feel that you have an itchy scalp, your hair is getting dull and dry or you are experiencing excess hair fall, then you should realise that it is best that you start using a natural shampoo.

Natural shampoos help retain the natural oils of your hair and when your hair is full of moisture, the tendency of it to break or split is reduced. You can also try out a paraben free dry shampoo as it will help absorb all dirt and oils and add to the health of your hair.

The Benefits of Using Natural Toxin Free Shampoos

The benefit of using a paraben free shampoo is that it is free of harmful chemicals and gives the same cleansing effect. So, you can still have a good hair wash without compromising on your hair and scalp health.

It might take some time to adjust to a natural toxin free shampoo, as they form less lather and you might have a feeling that it’s not cleaning your hair well and the hair might feel  heavier than usual. If that is the case, rinse your hair twice  or as suggested by a doctor. With continued use you will feel that the hair texture is well balanced. You may also notice scalp health improves.

The other benefits are that it is non-allergic. The natural ingredients are milder and suitable for all skin types. Natural shampoos and conditioners are suitable for coloured or permed hair, as they do not remove the hair colour or its texture. Natural shampoos are available for specific hair or scalp types. You can find natural shampoos specially designed for  conditions such as dandruff, dryness, etc. It is available for all hair types, ranging from normal to oily hair.

It is also a responsible choice as it is less harmful to the environment. Environment-friendly ingredients are used in place of the harsh synthetic chemicals, which pollute the environment, as they reach the water sources like rivers and lakes through our sewage systems, poisoning aquatic species and micro-organisms, and ultimately harming or destroying the ecosystem. Natural shampoos are biodegradable. Natural shampoos and conditioners disintegrate into non-toxic constituents that do not pollute the environment.
