August is observed as National Hair Loss Awareness Month - a month set aside to talk openly about a condition most people quietly live with for years before asking anyone about it. It was first marked to push earlier conversations between people losing hair and the professionals who can actually assess it, and it has since been picked up by clinics, dermatology bodies and health platforms worldwide.
The reason a whole month exists for it is simple: hair loss is never urgent, so it is almost always postponed. In India that delay runs longer than most. Hair fall gets treated as a cosmetic complaint, passed around as oil recommendations and home remedies, and taken seriously only once the scalp is visibly showing. By then the loss is no longer early-stage, and follicles that have already miniaturised are far harder to revive than follicles still producing hair.
Why awareness matters
Hair fall is usually a signal, not a standalone problem. Sustained stress, chronic sleep debt, iron and vitamin D deficiency, thyroid imbalance, PCOS and untreated dandruff all show up in the hair before they show up anywhere a person would otherwise notice. Awareness reframes hair fall as a health marker worth investigating - which is the whole difference between treating a symptom and treating a cause.
The myths worth retiring
- MythHair fall only happens to older men.
- RealityA large share of assessments come from people in their twenties and early thirties, across both genders.
- MythFrequent washing, hard water or a bad haircut causes baldness.
- RealityThese affect breakage and scalp health, but pattern hair loss is driven by genetics, hormones and internal health.
- MythOne product regrows hair.
- RealityOutcomes depend on identifying the cause first, then working on scalp, nutrition and hormones together over months.
Why early diagnosis changes the outcome
Hair loss moves through recognisable stages. Early on, the follicle is still alive and still producing hair - only finer and shorter with each cycle. Acting then protects the hair you still have. In advanced stages the follicle has stopped producing altogether, and the realistic goal shifts from regrowth to preservation. Knowing your stage, and what is driving it, is the single most useful thing you can do this month.

View ReportNine things behind most hair fall in India
Sleep
Why short, broken sleep pushes more hair into the shedding phase.
Stress
How sustained cortisol cuts short the growth phase of the hair cycle.
Hormones
DHT sensitivity, and why it decides where you thin first.
PCOS
The hormonal pattern behind thinning at the crown and parting in women.
Nutrition
Protein, iron and the everyday gaps in an Indian diet that show up in hair.
Dandruff
How an inflamed, flaking scalp weakens the follicles sitting under it.
Genetics
What a family history of baldness does - and does not - predict for you.
Thyroid
Why both an underactive and an overactive thyroid trigger diffuse shedding.
Vitamin deficiency
Vitamin D, B12 and biotin - the three flagged most often in assessments.
Six stages, seen from the top of the scalp
Stage 1
Full coverage. The hairline is intact and shedding is within normal range.
Stage 2
Mild recession at the temples, often mistaken for a maturing hairline.
Stage 3
Temples recede into a clear M shape and front density visibly drops.
Stage 4
Front recession continues and a separate thinning patch opens at the crown.
Stage 5
Crown and front thinning grow towards each other, leaving a narrow band between.
Stage 6
Front and crown merge. Hair remains mainly at the sides and back in a horseshoe.
Stages 1 and 2 are where treatment has the most to work with - the follicle is still producing hair, only finer and shorter each cycle. Women more often show diffuse thinning along the parting than a receding hairline, so female hair stages are read on a different scale.
Frequently asked
What is Hair Loss Awareness Month?
It is an annual observance held every August to get people recognising hair loss early, understanding what causes it, and getting assessed instead of waiting. It exists because hair fall is easy to normalise and easy to postpone - and postponing is what costs people their treatable window.
How common is hair loss in India?
Very. Pattern hair loss is the most common form and affects a large share of adults, with a meaningful number reporting it before 30. Across our assessment data, people from all 28 states and every age band from 18 to 60+ report active hair fall - which is exactly why the state-wise and age-wise reports on this page exist.
Does stress really cause hair loss?
Sustained stress can push a larger-than-usual share of follicles out of their growth phase and into shedding - a pattern known as telogen effluvium. It typically shows up as diffuse shedding two to three months after the stressful period, and it can also accelerate existing pattern hair loss. Short-lived stress rarely causes lasting change on its own.
Does lack of sleep increase hair fall?
Indirectly, yes. Poor sleep raises cortisol, disrupts the hormonal rhythms that regulate the hair cycle, and travels with the stress and nutrition patterns that already drive hair fall. In assessments, short sleep and high stress very often appear in the same profile.
Which age group experiences the most hair fall?
The 25–35 band accounts for the largest share of assessments - partly because hair loss genuinely accelerates in these years, and partly because this group is the most likely to seek help. The age-wise reports break this down by gender and by hair stage.
How is hair stage measured?
Male pattern hair loss is graded on the Norwood–Hamilton scale, which tracks recession at the hairline and thinning at the crown. Female pattern hair loss is graded on the Ludwig scale, which tracks widening of the parting and overall density. An online hair test estimates your stage from photographs and questions about your history; a professional assessment confirms it.
Can dandruff cause hair loss?
Dandruff does not cause pattern baldness, but it does cause inflammation and itching - and the scratching that follows loosens hair and damages an already stressed scalp. Left untreated over long periods, that inflammation makes an existing hair loss problem noticeably worse, which is why dandruff is tracked alongside the other factors in these reports.
