Derma roller

Quick Answer

To use a derma roller for hair growth, roll its fine needles over thinning areas of your scalp 1-2 times a week. Start shallow at 0.25-0.5 mm, moving to 1.0 mm only as thinning gets more moderate; 1.5 mm and deeper needs a dermatologist. Pairing it with minoxidil gives the largest measured gains, especially in men.

Derma rolling is one of the few at-home options with trial evidence behind it: depth and timing determine whether it helps or irritates your scalp.

What is a derma roller and how does it work for hair growth?

A derma roller is a handheld tool covered in fine needles. Rolling it over the scalp makes tiny punctures in your scalp. This is called microneedling.

This triggers wound healing and boosts blood flow and product absorption in the area. A 2023 biopsy confirmed new collagen after 4 months of solo rolling, alongside elastolysis, a breakdown of elastic fibres also seen on biopsy, whose clinical significance the study did not establish.

Does microneedling work alone, or is it better paired with minoxidil?

Microneedling on its own has weak evidence behind it. Men who did it alone, once a month for 4 months, showed tissue changes on biopsy but no gain in hair density. A 27-trial meta-analysis ranked microneedling alone below minoxidil alone for hair density at 24 weeks, and the pairing above both. Rolling is best understood as something that improves what you apply alongside it, not as a treatment in its own right.

Add minoxidil and the results improve further. In the landmark 2013 trial, 100 men used a 1.5 mm derma roller weekly with 5% minoxidil twice daily for 12 weeks, above this guide's home range. After 12 weeks, the measured outcome was a mean gain of 91.4 hairs per square centimetre in the combination group, against 22.2 with minoxidil alone. Traya's own guidance commonly summarises this trial as "50% more hair regrowth" with the combination, a widely cited figure that in fact tracks a separate, self-rated endpoint: 82% of the combination group rated their own improvement above 50%, against 4.5% on minoxidil alone, a self-rating, not a hair count.

How do you use a derma roller for hair growth?

Knowing how to use a derma roller for hair growth safely starts with depth.

At home, keep needles shallow: start at 0.25-0.5 mm, moving toward 1.0 mm only as thinning gets more moderate. 1.5 mm and deeper needs a dermatologist. A derma roller for hair has been tested at depths well beyond the home range across 17 clinical studies in pattern hair loss, but those clinical depths are not a safe at-home ceiling.

One to two sessions a week is the standard recommendation: a full-scalp pass at 0.5 mm, plus one lighter, optional hairline pass, since hair is finer there, paired with a full hair-care routine rather than used alone. Published guidance ranges from 1 to 3 sessions weekly, with most sources citing 1 to 2, and safety data is trial-tested at twice weekly. Do not exceed two sessions a week, since more frequent rolling raises the risk of scalp irritation without added benefit.

Follow this protocol for one safe session of derma roller for hair growth, from preparation through to storage:

Step 1: Clean your scalp and disinfect the roller

Wash your scalp with a sulphate-free shampoo and dry it fully. A damp scalp dilutes the alcohol soak. Soak the roller heads in 70% isopropyl alcohol for 5-10 minutes, then air dry.

Step 2: Section your hair and choose a needle length

Part your hair with clips to see the thinning areas, then pick a needle length in the 0.25-1.0 mm home range. Choose titanium or medical-grade stainless steel needles: both resist corrosion and hold a clean point. Leave deeper needles to a dermatologist.

Step 3: Roll with light, even pressure until you reach the stopping point

Use light pressure and go over each section 4-5 times per direction, rolling horizontal, vertical, and diagonal passes, and lifting the roller between passes.

Stop rolling when mild erythema, meaning slight scalp redness, appears. Never press hard enough to cause pinpoint bleeding. Redness marks the end, not a fixed count.

Step 4: Time it around minoxidil, and store the roller clean

If you use minoxidil alongside a derma roller for hair growth, pause it on rolling day and resume it 24 hours later. Applying topical minoxidil directly to open micro-wounds speeds systemic absorption, which can trigger low blood pressure, dizziness, or heart palpitations. Speak to your doctor before combining the two.

Skip harsh shampoos and strong actives for 24 hours. Soak, dry, and store the roller. Replace every 1-3 months, sooner if needles look dull.

Keep these four parameters in view every session:

  • Needle depth: 0.25-0.5 mm to start, up to 1.0 mm for more moderate thinning. 1.5 mm and deeper needs a dermatologist.

  • Session frequency: 1-2 times a week: one full-scalp pass at 0.5 mm, plus one optional lighter hairline pass.

  • Daily use: Untested, and not recommended.

  • Alone or with minoxidil: Works alone on its core benefits. Gains are largest paired with minoxidil, especially in men. The largest trial in women found no added benefit.

These figures assume healthy skin. See the safety notes below.

Is it safe to use a derma roller at home?

Yes: a home-use trial found a microneedle device safe over 6 months of twice-weekly use, with one mild, brief itching case and no serious harm. A broader review agrees: side effects are usually brief.

Safety note: Skip rolling if your scalp is irritated, cut, or infected. Anyone with psoriasis, eczema, or a history of blood clots should consult a dermatologist before starting. Recent transplant patients should wait 6-12 months first.

Expect mild redness for up to 7 days, soothed with aloe vera gel. That is wound healing, not harm. Longer irritation or bleeding needs a dermatologist.

Where derma rolling fits in a full hair-loss plan

A derma roller for hair growth works best as an adjunct rather than alone, as covered above. Pairing it with minoxidil has produced the largest measured gains in men. Evidence in women is mixed: in a 24-week trial in 245 women with pattern hair loss, adding microneedling monthly or every 2 weeks gave no added benefit over 2% minoxidil alone. A derma roller works on the scalp surface. The drivers behind pattern hair loss, genetics, hormones, nutrition, and scalp health, need attention too.

Results take time: 4-6 weeks for early gains, 3-6 months for visible density change. Rolling also raises topical absorption substantially, though the "up to five times" figure in wide circulation, including in Traya's own guidance, does not trace to a controlled measurement. A home-use trial of microneedle devices found good tolerability over repeated use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What benefits can you expect from a derma roller for hair?

You get the strongest hair-count results paired with minoxidil. Used alone, a derma roller still delivers its core benefits of derma roller for hair: wound healing, better scalp circulation, and better absorption of what you apply afterwards. It has not produced density gains on its own in trials, so treat it as something that improves an active topical rather than as a treatment by itself.

What size derma roller should you use for hair growth?

No single size is proven best. The published trials do not compare 0.25 mm against 0.5 mm directly. 0.5 mm is a better choice for regrowth: 0.25 mm mainly boosts absorption, while 0.5 mm is more likely to trigger wound healing.

What happens if you roll deeper than the at-home range?

Deeper needles need a dermatologist: they reach tissue needing clinical control, which raises scarring risk. Metal needles also carry a small allergy risk and, in darker skin, a hyperpigmentation risk.
